Project Understanding Pupils. Improvisation about Interculturality

Principal investigators: Apl. Prof. Dr. Ronald Kurt, PD Dr. Alfred Hirsch
Research coordinator: Laura Roser

Funded by: Ruhr.2010 GmbH

Project description:

Using the resources of improvisational theatre, pupils in the Ruhr region collaborate with scientists and artists to demonstrate how societies can cope with cultural diversity.

Three schools in the Ruhr region take part in the project: The Ricarda Huch Gymnasium (a grammar school in Gelsenkirchen), the Ludgerus Hauptschule (the equivalent of a secondary modern school in Duisburg), and the Frida Levy Gesamtschule (a comprehensive school in Essen). The interculturality that is practiced in these schools is portrayed in a playful way through improvisational theatre. Supported by artists found with the assistance of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, this allows young people to express their knowledge of the possibilities and limits to living together with people of different cultural backgrounds in an artistic way.

The climax of the project, funded by RUHR.2010, is an improvisational theatre workshop and a podium discussion.

The scientific basis for both of these events was the research project Intercultural understanding in schools in the Ruhr region. This project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and is based at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen.
