Ideals of freedom of purpose and freedom from value judgment are foundational to scientific knowledge, yet such regulative ideas collide again and again with considerations of usefulness and practicality. History and sociology of science, along with science and technology studies, have been able to show that the definition and practice of the sciences is dependent on specific contextual circumstances

At KWI, we round out the classical disciplines of science studies with approaches and methods from the humanities. Medial, symbolic, and performative facets thus shift into view: What role do storage possibilities play in passing on scientific knowledge; what changes occur in authorship and assessment, genre and ways of writing, institutions and rituals? What factors influence how the sciences are practised, performed, and recognised? In what ways can analyses of scientific cultures add to science studies grounded in philosophy, sociology, and history?

The sciences have always been communicated. Investigation of internal and external scientific communication in its various functionalities (from university PR to nonfiction books and science journalism, to newer formats of entertainment and participation), still a young field, has concentrated on the MINT area up to this point. Here, there is a twofold call for scholars from the cultural sciences: first, it is necessary to explore communication for the social sciences and humanities, and second, philologies as well as visual and media studies can offer their own analytical access.

At KWI, science and science communication are investigated through different projects.
