{"id":1455,"date":"2019-03-22T15:13:38","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T14:13:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kulturwissenschaften.de\/akademie-im-exil\/"},"modified":"2024-07-17T13:04:00","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T11:04:00","slug":"academy-in-exile","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.kulturwissenschaften.de\/en\/academy-in-exile\/","title":{"rendered":"Academy in Exile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Academy in Exile (AiE) began in 2017 as a joint initiative of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-due.de\/turkistik\/index_en.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute for Turkish Studies at the Universit\u00e4t Duisburg-Essen<\/a>, the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forum-transregionale-studien.de\/en\/homepage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forum Transregionale Studien<\/a> in Berlin. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkswagenstiftung.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volkswagen Foundation<\/a>, the Chancellery and Dean\u2019s Office of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-due.de\/en\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Duisburg-Essen<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiko-berlin.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin<\/a> (Institute of Advanced Study) provided initial funding and personnel support. Additional funding was made available by the New York-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholarrescuefund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute of International Education-Scholar Rescue Fund<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freudenbergstiftung.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freudenberg Foundation<\/a>. The first call for Volkswagen Foundation-funded applications was published in October 2017 and was earmarked for scholars at risk from Turkey. Through AiE\u2019s international academic contacts and, in keeping with communiqu\u00e9s from other programs catering to scholars at risk, the AiE Council became aware of emerging risk situations in other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Academy in Exile\u2014as a joint initiative of the Turkish Studies Department at the Universit\u00e4t Duisburg-Essen, the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen, the Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fu-berlin.de\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin<\/a>\u2014is open to scholars at risk from around the world. Thanks to funding provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/mellon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew W. Mellon Foundation<\/a>, AiE was able to offer fellowships to a second cohort of eight scholars in 2018\u201319 for a residency program on Critical Thinking at the Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin. Funding was renewed in 2019 for an extension period from 2020\u20132023 for a third cohort of fellows.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy is chaired by a council representing the participating partner institutes. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academy-in-exile.eu\/about-the-academy\/gremien\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Council<\/a> of the Academy is responsible for setting the research agenda with its fellows and coordinating the selection of fellows. The Academy has recently established an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academy-in-exile.eu\/about-the-academy\/advisory-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advisory Board<\/a>.
