The occasion is the German translation of <i>On Close Reading<\/i> by John Guillory, with an annotated bibliography by Scott Newstock (University of Chicago Press, 2025) in the joint Book Series &#8220;Historische Geisteswissenschften&#8221;, a collaboration between the Frankfurt Humanities Center, the ZfL Berlin, and the KWI Essen.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Newstock is Professor of English and Executive Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhodes.edu\/academics\/spence-wilson-center-interdisciplinary-humanities\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Spence Wilson Center for Interdisciplinary Humanities<\/a> at Rhodes College. He is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/news.rhodes.edu\/stories\/newstok-awarded-grant-state-research-agency-spain\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">ATRAE Distinguished Researcher<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/portalinvestigacion.um.es\/unidades\/14637\/detalle?lang=en\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Murcia<\/a>, Spain. He is the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691177083\/how-to-think-like-shakespeare\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>How to Think Like Shakespeare: Lessons from a Renaissance Education<\/i><\/a> (Princeton University Press, 2020). He also the author of the annotated bibliography for <i>On Close Reading<\/i> (John Guillory, University of Chicago Press, 2025), which has been named \u201can\u00a0extraordinarily\u00a0comprehensive bibliography compiled by Scott Newstok\u2014a\u00a0gift\u00a0to the discipline\u201d\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/society\/close-reading-john-guillory\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan Sinykin<\/a>, <i>The Nation\u00a0<\/i>Newstock&#8217;s <i>Close Reading Archive is accessible here: <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/closereadingarchive.org\/\" target=\"http:\/\/closereadingarchive.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><i>http:\/\/closereadingarchive.org\/<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eva Geulen is Director of the Leibniz-Center for Literary and Cultural Research (ZfL Berlin) and Professor of European Cultural History and the History of Knowledge at Humboldt University Berlin. She is the author of the preface to the German edition of <i>On Close Reading <\/i>as well as of a forthcoming essay on close reading in <i>Close Reading: Geschichte, Praktiken, Lektionen<\/i>, eds. Stefanie Heine, Rahel Villinger, Sandro Zanetti (Wallstein Verlag 2026). She has published widely on Goethe&#8217;s morphology, German aesthetics, Giorgio Agamben, and German Realism.<\/p>\n<p>Beer Albers is a PhD Candidate in the Excellence Cluster \u201cCross-Cultural Philology\u201d at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.
