Das internationale Forscherteam des ERC-Projekts “Cultures of the Cryosphere | Kulturen der Kryosphäre” schaut auf die Kehrseite unseres Kältekonsums und deckt ein weltweites System von Kühlketten, Kältespeichern und klimatisierten Räumen auf. Diese “künstliche Kryosphäre” ist eine essentielle und vermehrt überlebensnotwendige Infrastruktur – doch die energetischen und ökologischen Kosten unseres Kältekonsums sind uns meist ebenso wenig bewusst wie unsere fundamentale Abhängigkeit.
Das u.a. am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut Essen (KWI) angesiedelte Projekt untersucht diese “Kulturen künstlicher Kälte” und hat nun 12 Thesen zum gekühlten Leben im 21. Jahrhundert in einem Fact Sheet zusammengefasst.

The temperature is rising, and the air-conditioning systems are running. What is the cost of our growing dependence on cooling systems in the face of noticeable global warming?
The international research team behind the ERC project ‘Cultures of the Cryosphere’ is examining the flip side of our consumption of cold and uncovering a global system of cold chains, cold storage facilities and air-conditioned spaces. This ‘artificial cryosphere’ is an essential piece of infrastructure that is increasingly vital for survival. Yet we are usually just as unaware of the energy and environmental costs of our use of cooling as we are of our fundamental dependence on it.
The project, which is based at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities Essen (KWI), amongst other places, is investigating these ‘cultures of artificial cooling’ and has now summarised 12 theses on refrigerated life in the 21st century in a fact sheet.
