Visual Literacies is a joint model project of the German Youth Photo Award (KJF) and the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities Essen (KWI), which enables pupils to approach visual media in a critical, reflective and emotionally intelligent way.

In workshops at schools, photographs from the Youth Photo Prize are combined with current media events and image reading skills. This is about more than just analysis: participants learn to see more consciously, decipher cultural codes and make feelings and social interpretation patterns visible.

The project not only promotes visual literacy, but also develops innovative teaching materials and digital formats for sustainable educational work. An expansion to other cities, school types and collaborations is being planned.

Visual Literacies is supported by the Düsseldorf Cultural Office and the German Fotorat.
