Since May 2009 Bernd Sommer is research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) and research analyst to the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU)

2010 Visiting Scholar at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, Boston University

2008 Visiting Research Student at the Department for Sociology, London School of Economics and Political Sciene (LSE)

In 2008 Bernd Sommer was assistant lecturer in Sociology at the Institute for Sociology and Social Psychology at Leibniz University Hannover

From 2006 to 2009 he held a PhD scholarship by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES)

In 2005 Bernd Sommer was research analyst for the Bundestag parliamentary group of the Socialdemocratic Party (SPD) on issues of right-wing extremism as well as for the abatement and prevention of right-wing extremism

From 2002 to 2005 he was research assistant and head of office of a MP

From 1996 to 2002 Bernd Sommer studied Social Sciences in Hannover and London
