The World System and the New Mental Health

Aaron Neiman, KWI International Fellow

Online (Zoom) & Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen (KWI), Room 106, Goethestr. 31, 45128 Essen

In recent decades, a new orthodoxy about psychological well-being has taken hold in much of the rich world, best summarized by seemingly universalist refrains like „everybody has mental health.“ This talk attempts to trace the contours of this discourse, conceptualized broadly as „the new mental health,“ punctuated on one hand by the neoliberal revolution of the 1980s and 1990s and on the other by the rise of the far-right in the 2020s. The talk takes this cultural shift seriously as a laudable social development in many ways, while stressing the absurdity of such discourses in the imperial core amid violent inequality and cascading global crises. Some possible avenues for an anti-imperialist re-appraisal of the new mental health are considered.
