New Working Group on Mental Health

On a research stay (Jan 23 – March 23) at the University of Auckland, New Zealand with Associate Prof. Dr. Bruce Cohen (University of Auckland, Critical Mental Health, Sociology, Faculty of Arts), Jo Reichertz was able to establish new research connections and give a talk on his research on The communicative construction of gambling addiction as a means of solving other social problems. This exchange resulted in a newly established working group on ‚Mental Health‘.

Next to Reichertz and Cohen, the group consists of Prof. Dr. Peter Adams (University of Auckland, Social and Community Health, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences), a world-renowned gambling researcher, Dr. Jessica Terruhn (University of Waikato; Te Ngira Institute for Population Research; Urban Sociology and Community Studies), who is prominently involved in researching diversity and the reproduction of urban inequities, and Dr. Martin Harbusch (University of Siegen), who is a visiting scholar at the University of Auckland doing joint research with Dr. Cohen.

After many insightful conversations, the group intends to further the exchange of ideas through continued discussion and regular visits. The group has already begun their work on a joint article on Gambling and Medicalization. Dr. Cohen and Dr. Terruhn, as well as Dr. Harbusch are currently planning their visits to KWI. The group is also considering a potential joint research project.
