Dr. Dezso Mate

Academy in Exile@KWI Fellow

Dezso Mate has a PhD in Interdisciplinary Sociology from the Eotvos Lorand University. Currently he is a postdoctoral researcher at The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities – Das Kulturwissenschaftliche Institut Essen (KWI). As an Academy in Exile@KWI Fellow, Dezso continues his work on the situation of Romani people in Europe and anti-Roma racism with a special focus on LGBTQ+ rights.

Dezso Mate is a former Research Fellow of the Romani Studies Program at the Central European University. He was a Visiting Research Associate at the Centre for Higher Education and Equity Research, University of Sussex and a Junior Research Fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He worked as an international consultant at the Open Society Foundations, where his work focused on the intersectional challenges in public healthcare settings faced by Romani LGBTI people.

  • Manifestations of racism, sexism, LGBTI-phobia, and ableism;
  • Social movements, and injustices, Feminism, Gender rights, Hate crimes and speech;
  • Public Health – Psychical and mental health prevention – Social resilience, and resistance.
  • Concept of social responsibility,  social movement alliances and leadership building.
