Wir gratulieren unserem Kollegen Stefan Höhne, der gemeinsam mit einem internationalen Forscherteam heute für das Projekt „Kulturen der Kryosphäre. Infrastrukturen, Politiken und Zukünfte künstlicher Kälte“ mit dem renommierten Synergy Grant des Europäischen Forschungsrats (ERC) ausgezeichnet worden ist. Der Grant, der gemeinsam mit der Universität Duisburg-Essen eingeworben wurde, fördert das Projekt mit knapp 10 Millionen Euro für eine Laufzeit von sechs Jahren. Fast 400 Vorschläge gingen im Rahmen der Ausschreibung beim ERC in Brüssel ein, 37 Projekte erhalten nach einem hoch kompetitiven Auswahlverfahren insgesamt 395 Millionen Euro Förderung.
Das Projekt will die Auswirkungen künstlicher Kälte auf moderne Gesellschaften untersuchen und eine erste geografische Kartierung der globalen Kryosphäre sowie eine historische Rekonstruktion ihrer Entstehung vorlegen. Ebenso werden ethnografische Studien lokaler Kühlpraktiken und eine philosophische Analyse der Werte und Normen entstehen, die mit diesen Verfahren verknüpft sind. Das Projekt will damit auch zur Diskussion darüber anregen, wie ein gerechterer und nachhaltigerer Umgang mit künstlicher Kälte aussehen könnte.
Stefan Höhne ist der europaweit erste Kulturwissenschaftler, der mit einem ERC-Synergy Grant ausgezeichnet wird. Zuletzt war er Leiter des internationalen HERA-Projektes „Governing the Narcotic City“.
We congratulate our colleague Stefan Höhne, who, together with an international research team, has been awarded the prestigious Synergy Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) today for the project „Cultures of the Cryosphere: Infrastructures, Politics, and Futures of Artificial Cold.“ The grant, secured in collaboration with the University of Duisburg-Essen, supports the project with nearly 10 million euros over a period of six years. Nearly 400 submissions were received for the ERC call for proposals in Brussels, and after a highly competitive selection process, 37 projects were awarded a total of 395 million euros in funding.
The project aims to investigate the impacts of artificial cold on modern societies and present an initial geographical mapping of the global cryosphere, as well as a historical reconstruction of its origins. The project will also conduct ethnographic studies on local cooling practices and a philosophical analysis of the values and norms associated with these processes. The project aims to encourage discussion on what a more fair and sustainable approach to artificial cold could look like.
Stefan Höhne is the first cultural studies researcher in Europe to be honored with an ERC Synergy Grant. He was previously leader of the international HERA project „Governing the Narcotic City.“
